Spanish giants Real Madrid have, on Sunday, confirmed the extent of the injury suffered by Lucas Vazquez during yesterday’s El Clasico.

Real hold on

Zinedine Zidane and co. were of course back in La Liga action a little less than 24 hours ago.

Los Blancos welcomed Barcelona to the capital, for a highly anticipated renewal of Clasico rivalries.

The clash marked a crucial one in the race for the Spanish top-flight title, with the two heavyweights, along with Atletico Madrid, having been separated by just three points ahead of kick-off.

When all was said and done on Saturday, though, it was champions Real who proved their mettle to climb back to the division’s summit.

Goals from Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos eventually proved enough to guide the hosts to a 2-1 win, albeit with Barcelona having come within a matter of inches of clinching a last-gasp equaliser:

Vazquez out for season

On an otherwise positive evening for Real on Saturday, however, Los Merengues were also forced to deal with yet another defensive injury blow.

With the likes of Dani Carvajal, Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane (Covid) already sidelined, Lucas Vazquez joined those on the treatment table at the Bernabeu late in the first-half.

After managing to briefly carry on following a heavy collision with Sergio Busquets in the middle of the park, Spanish international Vazquez was eventually forced to limp off, in evident pain.

And the ensuing tests carried out on the versatile wide-man, on Sunday, have proven far from encouraging.

This comes with Vazquez having suffered a sprain to the cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The 29-year-old is therefore expected to sit out not only Real’s crunch Champions League quarter-final 2nd-leg meeting with Liverpool during the week, but also likely the remainder of the campaign:

Following tests carried out today on Lucas Vázquez by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a sprain to the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. His recovery will continue to be assessed.
