A touch of class on the part of Barcelona defender Gerard Pique means that new teammate Memphis Depay will be available for the club’s season opener versus Real Sociedad.
Amid the drama surrounding Lionel Messi’s shock departure, the subject of those to have actually made the move to the Camp Nou this summer has of course gone somewhat under the radar of late.
Before the exit of the club’s long-time talisman was made official, Barcelona confirmed the additions of all of of Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia, Emerson Royal, Sergio Aguero and Yusuf Demir.
Bizarrely, however, until today, none of Aguero (now sidelined), Depay or Garcia had been registered to feature in La Liga.
This came with Barca, on the back of years of abysmal financial decision-making, having been unable to ease the club’s wage bill below La Liga’s much talked about cap.

This would of course have come as a major concern for boss Ronald Koeman, with fellow countryman Depay in particular having proven one of the Blaugrana’s star performers in pre-season.
Pique steps up
As outlined above, though, on Saturday, just 24 hours out from the club’s season opener versus Sociedad, a solution has been found.
Taking to social media this afternoon, Barcelona released a statement, confirming that all of Memphis, Eric Garcia and Rey Manaj have been registered with La Liga.
All three, in turn, will be available to feature tomorrow.

The ability of those in a position of power in Catalunya to guide the club back below the Spanish top-flight salary cap, however, only came as a result of a wonderful gesture on the part of another member of Koeman’s squad.
The player in question? Gerard Pique.
As confirmed by Barca, the Spanish international has agreed to a ‘substantially reduced’ salary of his own, to ensure that his new teammates will not be forced to sit out the opening weekend of La Liga action.
