Atletico hand control to Real Madrid

Atletico Madrid were able to hold on to a valuable point at the Camp Nou yesterday in the 0-0 draw with Barcelona.

The point means that Atletico do hand control of the title race to Real Madrid. The current La Liga champions are three points behind their city rivals and play Sevilla today who themselves sit 7 points from the top with the game in hand.

The Spanish league does not use goal difference as the primary differentiation between teams should they be on the same points.

The league uses a head-to-head system which looks at the results of the matches played between the two sides. Because Real Madrid have a win and a draw over Atletico it means that should they draw level on points, Real Madrid would be the superior side in the table standings.

Simeone wont watch Real/Sevilla

The huge match between Real Madrid and Sevilla will have arguably the largest impact on the run-in with Los Blancos able to go top.

However, Atleti boss Diego Simeone says he will not watch the game as he doesn’t enjoy watching football lately.

“I don’t think I’ll watch it. I’m not watching the games, I don’t enjoy it and I prefer not to watch them,” Simeone said.

“It won’t change much if I watch it, we’ll be with the family having dinner and preparing for Monday. We need to play a good game.”

He may not watch it, but he will certainly be keeping up to date with the score.

What Ter Stegen said to Suarez

During the match there was a coming together between German keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen and his former teammate Luis Suarez.

In saving a strike, the keeper made contact with the Uruguayan’s head and Suarez went down in typical fashion claiming a penalty.

It has now been revealed by Marca the exchange the pair had during the moment.

“Hey, Luis!” Ter Stegen shouted at Suarez as the forward went down appealing to referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz. “Not like that!”

“Stay there,” Suarez repeated, as he laid on the floor. “Stay there, champ!”

Suarez was given nothing for his performance but a valuable point could make a huge difference in the title race.
