Premier League giants Arsenal have today been handed a boost in their reported pursuit of Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Leno to move on?

The situation between the posts in north London has of course been thrown up in the air over recent months.

This comes amid surprise speculation surrounding the future of current no.1 Bernd Leno.

The German endured a somewhat hit-and-miss campaign last time out, with a series of high-profile recent blunders – most notably versus Everton – having seen his first-choice status called into question.

That is an absolute shocker from Leno.

Leno himself, meanwhile, was not shy in admitting back in April that he is open to the idea of a ‘new adventure’, away from the Emirates:

‘I don’t know what will come in the future, but I’m open to everything.’

‘Maybe for a new adventure or to stay at Arsenal.’

Gunners boost

In turn, whilst seeking out a new goalkeeper had previously been regarded as some way down the list of priorities for those in a position of power at Arsenal, it could soon become a pressing issue.

And, as outlined above, on Thursday, an interesting update on the situation has been forthcoming.

One shot-stopper who has of course been persistently tipped for a potential move to the English capital of late has been Ajax star Andre Onana.

Ahead of the expiration of his contract at the Johan Cruijff ArenA next summer, it has been suggested that the Cameroonian could be available for as little as £7 million, the kind of fee which, considering his pedigree, unsurprisingly piqued attentions on the red half of north London.

Onana’s situation at present, however, is a complicated one. This comes with the 25-year-old in the midst of a controversial doping ban.

Back in February, Onana returned a urine test positive for banned substance Furosemide. In turn, UEFA were left with little choice but to sanction the African, resulting in a 12-month suspension.

As outlined above, though, on Thursday, all of Onana, Ajax and, crucially, Arsenal have been handed a boost.

As confirmed by a host of reliable sources, the gifted goalkeeper, on the back of an appeal, has seen his ban from the pitch slashed by three months:

Andre Onana’s ban has been reduced to nine months.

Onana will therefore be free to return to training from early September, ahead of making his comeback two months later – a considerably more enticing outlook for any and all clubs interested in his signature:

The Arsenal target will be available to play again on November 3rd and will be able to train with his club (whoever that may be) again from September 3rd.
