Arsenal has begun to go through the gears in their summer transfer plans recently as the Gunners have completed two long-term signings, but may be unable to shift Brazilian forward Willian off the club’s books.

According to @TuttoMercatoWeb, Willian looks likely to stay at #Arsenal as he is yet to receive any offers. This is mainly due to his €7.5m a year salary. https://t.co/pX7Am9iGOO

Young pair Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga have already completed moves to the Emirates this window, while bosses Edu and Mikel Arteta have been linked to the possibility of deals for the likes of Tammy Abraham, James Maddison, Rúben Neves, Aaron Ramsdale.

But Willian, once labeled as an important signing last summer, has hardly made himself feel welcome at Arsenal after what was a rather poor first season after his switch from Premier League rivals Chelsea. After scoring just once in the league in 2020-21 and being outperformed by emerging young talents Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka, Willian’s huge wage packet no longer seems viable to keep on the club’s books.

The stance this summer has always been that , with the Brazilian international being linked with possible moves to MLS outfit Inter Miami, with transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claiming that Willian was 100% guaranteed to leave.

With his large salary has come the issue of garnering enough interest to be able to shift the player on this summer, however, especially on the back of such an ineffectual season at the Emirates. Coupled with the fact that the native of Ribeirão Pires turns thirty-three just after the start of a 2021-22 Premier League season in which the likes of Emile Smith Rowe, Bukayo Saka, Nicolas Pépé, and Gabriel Martinelli are all expected to once again have large roles in the first-team, the need for Arsenal to shift him off the books is of crucial importance.

Being saddled with yet another bloated contract that is allowed to run down and the player to subsequently leave on a free would be another example of the club not learning from past mistakes, and if Edu and Arteta intend to bring in another attacking player this summer, Willian surely has to promptly be ushered off the premises.
