Dean Smith’s men were of course back in action a little over 48 hours ago.
The Claret and Blue made the trip to Anfield, for a Premier League meeting with champions Liverpool.
Villa headed into proceedings aiming to get their surprise pursuit of European football back on track, having managed just a solitary league victory across their prior 5 outings.
In turn, when Ollie Watkins handed the visitors the lead against the run of play on the stroke of the interval, Villa looked well on their way to doing exactly that:

Liverpool, however, had other ideas.
First, early in the 2nd-half, Mohamed Salah headed home from close range, to bring the hosts level.
Then, just when it appeared as though Villa had done enough to secure a share of the spoils, Trent Alexander-Arnold produced a moment of magic, rifling home from the edge of the area to decide the clash in Liverpool’s favour:

Trezeguet ruled out
Aston Villa’s woes, though, were not confined solely to the eventual scoreline on Merseyside on Saturday.
They were also forced to deal with a concerning late blow on the personnel front.
As the action rolled into the final ten minutes, Trezeguet, who had proven influential throughout the clash, pulled up with what appeared to be a knee problem.
In turn, after being seen to by the away side’s medical team, it was quickly decided that the Egyptian was in no condition to continue, forcing him off to be replaced by Jacob Ramsey.
Trezeguet underwent scans to ascertain the extent of the damage over the weekend, as those of a Villa persuasion stood by with bated breath.
As outlined above, though, the ensuing news is far from what Dean Smith and co. would have been hoping for.
In an official statement released on Monday evening, Villa have confirmed that Trezeguet has suffered ligament damage in his knee, and will, in turn, go under the knife over the days ahead.
The winger now joins the Claret and Blue’s captain and star man, Jack Grealish, on the sidelines.
Wishing you a full and speedy recovery, @Trezeguet. 💪
