Varane’s Madrid future
Varane would join Los Blancos in 2011, departing French outfit Lens for a fee believed to be around £9m.
Varane was only 18 years of age made he made the switch to the Bernabeu, so £9m did seem likely a fair high sum back then.
However, Varane has since gone on to become a key cog in Madrid’s backline.
All told, the Frenchman has now notched 355 appearances across all competitions for Real, playing key roles in their recent Champions League and domestic success.
However, Varane’s future in the Spanish capital does appear to be up in the air.
Come the summer, Varane will have just one year to run on his current contract with Madrid. And if he does not sign a new deal, selling the stopper in the upcoming window to ensure they recoup some money for him is likely to be Madrid’s best option.
When drawn on his future in September of 2020, Varane was rather coy:
“For the future, it’s difficult to plan. Real Madrid is a very, very big club with great players. What’s important is that everyone plays their part in the team.”
Then, more recently, reports suggested that Madrid were not expecting Varane to renew his deal.
Varane eyed by English sides
Now, if he does not renew, Varane could represent something of a bargain to any potential suitors this summer.
Manchester United have been one of the sides more heavily with the 27-year-old.
Now though, Spanish outlet AS claim that all of United, Chelsea and PSG want Varane.
The report goes on to speculate that Madrid could sell Varane for between €50-€70m.
