Alaba brings a wealth of experience and enormous success during his time in Bavaria, spending 10-years as a key piece of the puzzle at the Allianz Arena while making over 420-total appearances across all competitions and collecting twenty-seven pieces of silverware, including two Champions League trophies. He said:

“I decided to take the next step in my career. Of course I received different offers but there was only one option and it was Real Madrid. This is a dream come true, it’s the biggest club in the world”

But headlines have been made upon his official announcement with the club when Alaba was unveiled to be the new owner of the number four shit, formerly owned by a certain Sergio Ramos.

Ramos, , was an iconic owner of the number and will surely go down in history as one of the club’s greatest centre-backs in its illustrious history But for Alaba, it was never about trying to replace his predecessor though he intends to do right by the significance of the number.

“Hello everyone, thank you very much for the warm welcome. Today is a big day in my career and I’m very excited and proud to wear this shirt. I hope we can be very successful together. Hala Madrid! I spoke with the club about the number and they offered me 4. I think there wasn’t any other available. I know what the number means, it is an honour to wear it. Pressure of the number 4 due to Ramos? Everyone knows what Ramos means to Real Madrid. I am motivated.”

Speculation will remain about the role Alaba will play under Carlo Ancelotti, a manager he has previously played under while at Bayern. Capable of playing in midfield either centrally or on the left, at centre-back, but most notably as a left-back, his signing could throw further fuel to the fire regarding the future of Raphael Varane as well as if he may slot into the centre of defence.
