(Reading time: 2 - 3 minutes)

A remarkable statistic, highlighting both Joe Willock’s impressive form in front of goal, and parent club Arsenal’s struggles, has come to the fore online this afternoon.

Magpies strike late

Midfielder Willock has of course grabbed the headlines once again on Saturday.

This comes with the Arsenal loanee having been back in action, as Newcastle made the trip to Anfield, for a Premier League meeting with Liverpool.

It was Jurgen Klopp’s hosts who opened the game’s scoring early on, when Mohamed Salah slotted home his 20th league goal of the campaign.

From here, the Reds carved out a host of further chances, and could easily have headed into the interval three or even four goals to the good.

In the end, however, Liverpool failed to add to their tally, opening the door for Newcastle to strike late, and further cement their spot in the English top-flight for another season.

Just minutes after Callum Wilson saw what looked set to be a crucial equaliser ruled out by VAR, that man Willock stepped up, slotting home from the middle of the area (with the help of a deflection) to secure a share of the spoils with the last kick of the game:

Gunners loanee shining

Willock’s strike at Anfield of course came as just the latest in a string of telling contributions on the part of the young Englishman of late, after he also found the net off the bench versus both Tottenham and West Ham.

And such impressive exploits, as outlined above, have since given rise to a remarkable statistic.

As revealed by Jake Entwistle of Squawka, in the month of April, Arsenal, as a squad, have managed just one Premier League goal more than their midfield loanee.

This comes despite the fact that Willock has featured on the pitch for a mere 47 minutes, compared to a full 360 on the part of the Gunners.

Arsenal in the Premier League in April 2021: 360 minutes, 4 goals

Joe Willock in the Premier League in April 2021: 47 minutes, 3 goals

We’re cursed.
