Wijnaldum’s Liverpool future
Georginio Wijnaldum joined Liverpool in 2016, departing Newcastle for a fee in the region of £24m.
The Dutchman was often used in a more advanced role for the Magpies. However, under Jurgen Klopp, the 30-year-old has dropped into a deeper role.
In turn, alongside Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, ‘Gini’ has formed a devastating midfield trident which has proven absolutely essential to Liverpool’s success over recent seasons.
At present, however, it looks as though Wijnaldum is heading for the Anfield exit door.
The former Newcastle man’s contract situation has been up in the air for some time now, with his current terms set to expire in the summer.
In turn, conflicting reports have spread regarding what exactly is set to unfold.
Speculation last summer went as far as to suggest that the Premier League champions had no plans to offer Wijnaldum a new deal.
The Athletic then reported in December, though, that both Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool want to keep the Dutchman at Anfield.
Last month, meanwhile, claims began to mount that Wijnaldum has agreed to the terms of a pre-contract with Spanish powerhouse, FC Barcelona.
Wijnaldum to stay put?
No official announcement of Wijnaldum’s departure has yet been forthcoming.
But with just over a month of the current campaign left to play, Liverpool fans are no doubt expecting one of their key men to leave Anfield this summer.
However, a report from the Telegraph on Tuesday has offered the Merseysiders some hope regarding a Wijnaldum stay.
According to the Telegraph, Wijnaldum has given Liverpool hope of staying at Anfield beyond the summer when his contract expires.
The report also mentions Barca’s links, as well as claiming Inter Milan have shown an interest. But they go on to state that no pre-contract has been announced and the door is still open for Wijnaldum to remain at Liverpool with a new deal.
