Wijnaldum’s uncertain future

The former Newcastle man’s contract situation has been up in the air for some time now, with his current terms set to expire in the summer.

In turn, conflicting reports have spread regarding what exactly is set to unfold.

last summer went as far as to suggest that the Premier League champions had no plans to offer Wijnaldum a new deal.

The Athletic then reported in December, though, that both Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool want to keep the Dutchman at Anfield.

Last month, meanwhile,  began to mount that Wijnaldum has agreed to the terms of a pre-contract with Spanish powerhouse, FC Barcelona.

Souness accuses Wijnaldum of lacking intensity

Amidst all the speculation, though, Wijnaldum has continued to be a regular feature under Jurgen Klopp this campaign.

In fact, the Dutchman has been one of the few players at Liverpool not to spend any sort of lengthy period on the sidelines this term.

And though Liverpool as a squad have struggled throughout much of 2020/21, Wijnaldum has actually been fairly decent for most of the season so far.

However, former Liverpool man Graham Souness has now accused Wijnaldum of not playing with the same intensity this campaign:

Injuries have hurt Liverpool badly, but they have not played with the same intensity either. Some players have felt sorry for themselves.

They have not responded as well as Jürgen Klopp would have expected or wanted them to. They felt it wasn’t their year and have meekly accepted that.

They need to rebuild their midfield — it’s the catalyst for their pressing. People talk about the strikers, but a lot of their success was based on getting the ball back so quickly because of Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Fabinho putting a shift in.

Wijnaldum is leaving for Barcelona and I’m not sure how I’d have reacted to a player who made it clear he was off, how that goes down in a dressing-room. The players may make a joke of it, but it also may not sit well with all of them.

He’s not played with the same intensity this season, Henderson has been absent with injuries, Naby Keita has not shown he can step up, Milner’s another year older, Fabinho’s often filled in at centre back and Thiago Alcantara has come into a team that’s been huffing and puffing.
