Kalvin Phillips stars for England vs Croatia

England got their Euro 2020 off to a flying start on Sunday, picking up a 1-0 win over Croatia.

Sunday’s win was the first time England had won their opening European Championship game in history.

Raheem Sterling would score the only goal of the day. However, it was another England star who stole the show.

That man was Kalvin Phillips. The Leeds midfielder has not had the most impressive England career to date, and when partnered alongside Declan Rice, has looked pretty average.

However, Phillips would be moved into a no.8 role against Croatia, which saw him chasing down every ball, putting in some superb tackles and, most importantly, slipping in Sterling for the winner:

Real Madrid scouts show interest in Phillips

After the game, Phillips had this to say:

“It’s a great feeling to get an assist and a great feeling for the three points.

“I’m laid back – that’s the kind of person I am regardless of what is thrown at me. I just try and take it in my stride.”

Gareth Southgate was also full of praise for the midfielder:

“Kalvin Phillips is a player who is so understated. He has had a fantastic start to his international career. I thought he was immense throughout the game – as they all were.

“Working with Marcelo Bielsa and having the season he has gave him confidence, but all the attributes were there. High performance, low maintenance – we like that a lot.”

Now, somewhat surprisingly, Phillips’ display on Sunday looks to have piqued the interest of a top club.

According to Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Carlo Ancelotti wants to improve Real Madrid’s midfield this summer.

And, after his showing vs Croatia, Phillips has attracted the attention of Real’s scouts. It is added that Madrid have now decided to follow Phillips’ Euro 2020 closely.
