The figures quoted in February seem much smaller than what has been most recently touted.

Guardiola explains rotation

Taken by surprise on the weekend, Manchester City’s loss to Leeds United ahead of their crucial second leg against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League quarter-final will have been a much needed reality check.

Knowing that the match with the German side is on the horizon Guardiola made as many as seven changes to his starting 11 which ultimately, despite having a much more dominant display than their opponents, managed to succumb to a 2-1 defeat.

Guardiola explained his decision behind the rotation of his players.

“I say many times to the players, ‘you play because I want to let you play’ but it’s not because I want to reserve players,” said Guardiola.

“I put a selection to win the game. I demand the guys who play every single game to win.

“I don’t select on competition. I select every team to win each specific game.

“If not, you cannot arrive in this position in the Premier League and the other competitions.

“Now we will rest together, prepare for Dortmund and then the other ones.”

City travel to Germany to play Dortmund on Wednesday at 8pm.
