A breathless 90 minutes of action in Paris tonight eventually resulted in PSG booking their spot in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Choupo-Moting’s finish not enough

After just a week’s break, European football’s premiere club competition of course returned to our screens this evening.

In one of two quarter-final 2nd-leg showdowns, holders Bayern Munich made the trip to Paris Saint-German, for a repeat of last season’s finale.

It was the hosts who headed into proceedings boasting the advantage, on the back of a hard-fought victory at the Allianz Arena last Wednesday.

Goals from Kylian Mbappe (2) and Marquinhos eventually proved enough to guide the Ligue 1 champions to a 3-2 victory, perfectly setting the stage for another all-action affair in the French capital.

And whilst, when all was said and done, the final scoreline on Tuesday did not prove quite as outlandish as it did last time out, PSG and Bayern certainly couldn’t be accused of not giving fans across the globe their money’s worth.

Another absolutely pulsating 90 minutes eventually resulted in a solitary going separating the sides at the full-time whistle.

The finish in question came late in the first-half, when a scrappy sequence culminated in Jean-Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting – again filling in for the sidelined Robert Lewandowski – nodding home from close range.

Both sides, in turn, exchanged chances as the clash wore on, with hosts PSG having carved out a whole host of a presentable variety.

In the end, though, Mauricio Pochettino’s men did enough, holding out to send the European champions packing, and set up a tantalising showdown with one of Manchester City or Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League’s final-4.

Neymar wonderful/Gueye integral

On the back of the action coming to a close at the Parc des Princes, a whole host of PSG players have since unsurprisingly been singled out for widespread adulation online.

Kylian Mbappe looked as dangerous as ever, Keylor Navas was masterful between the posts throughout, whilst the likes of Colin Dagba and Leandro Paredes also stood up when it mattered most.

For the most part, though, it is star man Neymar who has grabbed the headlines post-match.

The Brazilian dynamo, despite fluffing a number of fine opportunities in front of goal, showcased once again this evening exactly why, on form, he remains one of world football’s finest.

Neymar was at the heart of absolutely everything positive the home side produced, lighting up the Champions League stage with vision, touch, and an unrivalled eye for the spectacular.

On a night where ‘the others’ at PSG may well slip somewhat under the radar, though, it feels only right to highlight the contributions of one other player in particular – Idrissa Gueye.

Former Everton man Gueye has endured a less than perfect stint in Paris to date, since surprisingly linking up with PSG in the summer of 2019.

Tonight, though, under the watch of Mauricio Pochettino, the all-action midfielder shone bright.

Patrolling the base of the hosts’ midfield with bite and composure, Gueye, alongside the aforementioned Paredes, provided the perfect base for the likes of Neymar, Mbappe and Angel Di Maria to thrive further forward.

The Senegalese has never been the most pretty player on the eye, but his crucial role this evening, and potentially moving forward, simply cannot be overlooked.
