Chiellini’s Donnarumma praise
In the end, the Euro 2020 tournament was decided on penalties and always in these moments the focus moves quickly to the goalkeepers and whether or not they have the ability to save their side and win them the match.
England’s Jordan Pickford was able to stop two penalties but his counterpart Gianluigi Donnarumma matched him and saw Marcus Rashford hit the post.
After the match, captain Giorgio Chiellini spoke of his keeper and how he now follows in the footsteps of Gianluigi Buffon.
“I’m lucky because I’ve played with Gigi Buffon – now I play with Gigi Donnarumma and it’s the same!”
“It’s a dream come true. Really, it’s unbelievable. We felt some magic when we started this stage… we are so happy, more than happy.”

Chiellini was arguably the defender of the tournament alongside Leonardo Bonucci who scored the equaliser on the night.
After the game, Chiellini went from footballer to wordsmith. Taking to social media to write a poem about the victory.
Dedicating the victory to all of the healthcare workers who helped to save lives through the pandemic.
“Thanks to you. To all of you. Because in this incredible adventure we took you inside. Before your eyes you. In our hearts you. The pain of those who have suffered.
“The efforts of those who have been brought to their knees by the pandemic. The desire to come back to life.
“The faces of women, men, old, young, children and those who saved our lives: doctors. You pushed us. You helped us. You sang with us.
“The result is only part of the game but this result, this victory, these tears of joy are dedicated to you. We made history!”
If you missed this last night, this bit of poetry, where Chiellini dedicates the Euro win to the doctors and nurses of the pandemic in a thread, is beautiful. https://t.co/IWzF2QRXnK

Chiellini may be on the opposing team but his love of the game and his country is a humbling sight.
