Partey injured vs Chelsea

Arsenal have got in some valuable minutes in pre-season against varying levels of opposition. Yet were beaten again in their preparation, this time by Chelsea in a 2-1 defeat at the Emirates.

Kai Havertz and Tammy Abraham’s goals cancelled out Granit Xhaka’s sole strike. Although Joe Willock had a shot cross the line but no goal-line technology to check it had in fact gone over.

A good run out and plenty of crucial minutes but Mikel Arteta was frustrated to lose key midfielder Thomas Partey to injury.

Some suggestions led to a timeframe of up to 6 weeks thanks to the incident.

Found the specific mechanism of injury for Partey (see picture).

This is typically indicative of a “high ankle sprain” aka syndesmotic tear. These typically come with a 4-6 week return timeline if a grade 1 injury. Recent example is Harry Maguire. pic.twitter.com/syae1CWCjk

However, there has been some positive news.

Brentford appearance unlikely

This morning CBS reporter and former Arsenal correspondent for football.london James Benge revealed that the injury to Partey was not as bad as first feared. However, did confirm he would likely be unavailable for the match with Brentford on the opening day.

‘Early indications on Partey’s injury are that he’s likely to miss Arsenal’s opening game against Brentford. However there is optimism that the ankle injury is not as bad as it might have been,’ wrote Benge.

The question now will be who starts in midfield for Arsenal. Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny are the long-serving options for Arteta but new signing Sambi Lokonga has impressed since joining from Anderlecht and could be chosen to start in the Ghanaian’s absence.
