Chelsea vs Brighton

Tuesday’s sole Premier League fixture played out a short time ago. The clash pitted Chelsea against Brighton at Stamford Bridge.

Following confirmation that Chelsea plan to withdraw from the European Super League, the meeting marked one of importance once again.

The Blues began the day in 5th in the Premier League table. However, they only sat outside of the Champions League places by a point, and were aware that a win on Tuesday would guide them up to 3rd.

Brighton, meanwhile, were aiming to further extend the six-point gap between themselves and the relegation zone.

Chelsea up to 4th despite lackluster attacking showing

The tie began with Chelsea unsurprisingly on top, though few clear-cut chances were created by Thomas Tuchel’s side early on.

In fact, when the whistle was blown for half-time, the hosts had managed just two efforts on target, neither of which caused Robert Sanchez too much of an issue.

Brighton’s first decent chance of the game came in the 41st minute, when Yves Bissouma saw an effort deflected over following a lovely passage of play from the away outfit.

Unfortunately for the Chelsea faithful, the second 45 began in much the same fashion as the first ended.

As has become fairly commonplace under Tuchel, the Blues dominated play, and had plenty of the ball.

But despite all of the attacking talent at their disposal, the London outfit once again struggled to carve out big chances.

This eventually led to Timo Werner and Callum Hudson-Odoi being introduced from the bench shortly after the hour-mark.

These changes had little impact, however, with Tuchel having then looked to Olivier Giroud to add some spark to his side’s attack.

But, nevertheless, it was Brighton who had the next real chance. After Kurt Zouma stuttered on the ball, he was dispossessed, allowing Adam Lallana to get a shot off, but the midfielder fired wide.

Danny Welbeck then smashed a long-range effort off Kepa’s post, as the Seagulls edged closer to a huge goal at the Bridge.

In the end, though, the score remained deadlocked, with the points eventually shared.

And though a draw was enough for Chelsea to climb up to 4th, the club’s fans, along with Tuchel himself, were no doubt once again left frustrated by their lack of real cutting edge in the final 3rd of the pitch.

Some of the Chelsea faithful, in turn, have now called for Tammy Abraham – who remains the club’s top scorer this season – to be handed more chances moving forward.
