Jose Mourinho sacked by Tottenham

After news of the European Super League engulfed the footballing world on Sunday, Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham sacking went somewhat under the radar.

The Portuguese was relieved of his duties on Monday, less than a week before Spurs are set to face Manchester City in the League Cup final.

The sacking means that Spurs now represent the first side with whom Mourinho has failed to win a single trophy.

Ryan Mason has since taken temporary charge of the Lilywhites until the end of the season.

In all likelihood, Spurs will then appoint a more experienced figure ahead of next season, especially now they actually have to earn their European football and not just pay their way into a league.

Tottenham linked with Marcelino

So far, a number of high-profile figures have been linked with the job.

Julian Nagelsmann is said to be of interest to the north London outfit, though Bayern Munich are also believed to be keen on the RB Leipzig boss.

TRUE ✅ as I told on Friday in our show. @SpursOfficial is interested in Julian Nagelsmann, Manager of @DieRotenBullen – but also FC Bayern is interested. And: Bayern is his favorite pic.twitter.com/bxWXorOEeY

Brendan Rodgers has also recently spoken out about his links to the Spurs job.

Now, though, another name is being linked with the north London outfit on Wednesday.

According to The Athletic, the representatives of Athletic Bilbao manager Marcelino have been contacted.

It is added that Marcelino’s contract with the Spanish outfit expires in 2022 and there are clauses in his contract which mean he would not be too expensive to sign this summer.

Marcelino, though, has only been Bilbao manager since January, with the club currently 11th in La Liga and winless in five.

Sources tell @TheAthleticUK: Tottenham make initial contact with Athletic Bilbao boss Marcelino to establish his situation & availability. Club forming a list of options. Exploring sporting director model too. (With @JackPittBrooke)https://t.co/xgsUlnpTtw
